Convergence 3i: Industry-Institute-Interaction

Convergence 3i, an Industry Institute Interaction event organized jointly by SDMIMD and CII Mysore Chapter on September 16, 2016, attracted more than 200 final year degree students and fresh graduates in and around Mysore. Dr. N. Muthukumar, President of the CII, Mysore Chapter in his address stressed on need of right attitude and said, it key for securing employment in any organisation while skills can be taught.  Dr. Shrijay Devraj Urs, Executive Director, MYRA School of Business, the Chief Guest of the meet delivered the inaugural address on ‘Reducing the Gap between Learning and Application’. Dr. Urs said ‘creating world class facilities for educational services eventually produce world class students, who are employable anywhere’.
 
Earlier, Dr N.R. Parasuraman, Director SDMIMD, gave introductory remarks. Earlier Prof. Prasad S.N., Chairman Admissions and event Coordinator, welcomed the gathering. Prof C.V. Sridhar presented the vote of thanks.
 
The inaugural session was followed by Panel Discussion on “The Changing Dimensions of Employer Expectations from Fresh Graduates”, moderated by Prof. Prasad S.N. Dr. B.M. Subraya, Mr B.G. Mohankrishna and Ms. Akshara Kumar- entrepreneurs and Mr. Gopalkrishna Sastry of Wuerth Electronics along with SDMIMD students Mr. Srikant Kadkol and Ms. Harshita Gakkhar were the panel members.   The discussion covered the key aspects of the dynamics of change in the job market over the past few years and how the students can equip themselves.

Seminar on ‘Microfinance and its future in India’

Mr. Vittal Rangan, was the resource person for the Seminar on Microfinance and its future in India held on September 16, 2016 at SDMIMD. Speaking on the topic of the seminar Mr. Vittal Rangan said there is need for behavioural changes in India to bring financial inclusion which is currently as low as 36% and young managers should be introduced to microfinance industry in their course curriculum and sensitizing on responsible financing and role of microfinance in remittances, to make the situation better.  
 
Sharing his personal experience and success stories in Ujjivan, Mr. Vittal focused his talk on the role of microfinance in financial inclusion and its importance in economic growth of India. He explained in detail about the difference between microfinance and commercial banks. The talk exposed students to several dimensions of microfinance industry in current scenario.
 
During Q&A session Mr. Vittal called upon the SDMites to question themselves about their expectations from life and make their career in the fields they are passionate about and not to give in to peer or parental pressure. 

Commencement of Doctoral Program at SDMIMD

The first batch of the Doctoral Program [Ph.D.] of SDMIMD, conducted its research unit SDM Research Center for Management Studies (SDM RCMS) has commenced on 3 September 2016. The program is recognized by University of Mysore. SDMIMD is a unique management institution that has pioneered a philosophy of management education, which has been both Indian in ethos, and, global in relevance.  Being known for its flagship program – Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) from past 22 years, has widened the scope by offering Doctoral Research Program in Management Studies. 
 
Dr. N. R. Parasuraman, Director – SDMIMD addressed the gathering on the occasion. He emphasized on the need for original research in the field of management. He also pointed out that, a research scholar should look at things differently and accept changes in perspectives, while conducting the research work. Dr. Mousumi Sengupta, Chairperson - RCMS​,​ welcomed the scholars and emphasized that, a researcher must be self-driven in conducting a meaningful research work. The Ph.D. program seeks to build on the current strengths and activities of the Institute in terms of conferences, publications, research and interaction, with scholars from the world over. Dr. Sunil M.V. coordinated the program. Faculty members and staff of SDMIMD were present on the occasion.​

Visit by Staff and Students of The British University in Dubai (BUiD)

SDMIMD hosted students from British University in Dubai (BUiD), Dubai, who participated in a week long academic exchange program. They were accompanied by a staff member, Mr. Amer Alaya, Head of Student Administration and Admission, BUiD, Dubai, and enjoyed the ambience and hospitality of SDMIMD in Mysore. The program was inaugurated on 22 August 2016 by Dr. N. R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD, Mysore, in their campus. The faculty of SDMIMD conducted special sessions to the students of BUiD related to courses like Finance, Operations, Marketing, Human Resources, Information Technology, Managerial Communication, and general management. The class sessions were held in the morning every day and in the afternoon, the students were taken on an industry visit. They visited three well established industries namely Vinyas Innovative Technologies, Skanray Technologies, and Software Paradigms India, in Mysore, and had a good exposure to the corporate culture in India, and management practices. 
 
They also visited the Mysore office of Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, popularly known as SKDRDP, which is a charitable trust promoted by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade. Chairman, SDME Trust. SKDRDP concentrates on the empowerment of rural women by organizing Self-help Groups (SHGs) and provides infrastructure and finance through micro credit for the rural people. It also encompasses all aspects of enriching the rural life. The BUiD students got all the information about the social responsibility and rural development by interacting with the executives and personnel from the project group. Further, the BUiD students worked on group projects by collaborating with the second year PGDM students of SDM IMD, under the guidance of the faculty. During the week, one day was exclusively provided for the BUiD students for Social interaction, sightseeing and private time which enabled them to visit popular tourist spots in and around Mysore. The program ended on 27 August 201 with a formal valedictory, and the students were given the certificate of participation. They expressed their happiness and satisfaction about the stay, arrangements, and the academic inputs, which made their visit to Mysore a memorable one.

Alumnus on Campus - Mr. Raj Singh from KPMG

Basel norms are the buzz words among the banking sector and Mr. Raj Singh, alumnus of SDMIMD, and Vice-president, KPMG Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd., spoke on this buzz word on August 20, 2016 to SDMites. Starting from the historical perspective of developments that happened right from the Great Depression, Mr. Raj Singh informed how it is very important to cover the risk. He illustrated how the provision for risks to be created and erosion of capital needs to be arrested through appropriate risk control mechanisms. He also mentioned about the salient features of the Basel norms and indicated how they are going to help the economy by risk minimization and enable better settlements.

‘Innovation is Core’ - Prof. Fabrice Galia

Prof. Fabrice Galia, Professor, Burgundy School of Business, France, addressed SDMites on August 20, 2016 in his address to the audience focused on innovation and mentioned that no field can survive without innovation, that applies to the field of finance also. Prof. Galia stated that both product and service innovations are required to create value. Innovation, he stated that, derives a push from the demand as well the technological developments. The innovation at the organizational level as well the personal level play major role in improving the business and economy.  Prof. Galia opined that all the business activities including the support activities have to be innovative to add value to the customers. His conclusion was to build the innovation culture across the entire organization be it government or private, to stay competitive in the market.

In-House Training Program for Vinyas Innovative Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

SDMIMD over a period of time has conducted a number of corporate training programs for the benefit of industries and the latest offering is a customized management development program offered and conducted for Vinyas Innovative Technologies, Mysore. This program spread over a period of five months beginning from August 2016, involves coverage of all the essential topics under the areas of Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, Operations, and negotiations. Dr. H. Gayathri, Deputy Director and Professor of Marketing at SDMIMD is coordinating the whole program and in consultation with the executives from the Vinyas IT has identified the topics. The contents have been carefully designed and developed by the experienced faculty of SDMIMD, to suit the requirements of the company. About 35 participants with various backgrounds and disciplines are attending the sessions being held in the SDMIMD campus.

Pre Conference Workshop on Empirical Research in Finance

Dr. SSS. Kumar (Dean Academics) and Professor-Finance, Accounting and Control, IIM Kozhikode addressed the gathering on ‘Emerging Trends in Finance’. During the inaugural session, Dr.Kumar focussed on ‘Microstructure of Financial Markets’ and how research could be undertaken by the academic fraternity. Dr.M.Sriram, Conference Chair delivered a talk on ‘Time Series Analysis’. The session highlighted on the types of secondary data used in finance research, issues relating to usage of secondary data and tools to resolve them. The panel discussion on ‘Empirical Research in Finance- Topics, Analysis  and Models’ was spearheaded by Dr.N.R.Parasuraman, Director and Professor-Finance, SDMIMD and  the panel members  addressed various facets of teaching, research and publications in Finance and Accounting. Dr.Amitha Sehgal, visiting faculty, Welingkar Institute of Management, Mumbai spoke on ‘Research Ideas in Banking’ and suggested few contemporary issues surrounding banking sector. The valedictory session was addressed by Mr.S.S.Bhandare, Advisor, Tata Strategic Management Group, Mumbai, who gave a pep talk on ‘Reflections of Monetary Policy in India’. 
 
The workshop organized as a part of 5th International Conference on Emerging Trends in Finance, Accounting and Banking scheduled on August 19 & 20, 2016 was inaugurated by Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD. Dr. M. Sriram, Conference Chair welcomed the gathering and presented the theme of the workshop. 

CEO on Campus - Mr. Balagopal

SDMIMD students got the opportunity to hear Mr. C. Balagopal , a beaurocrat turned entrepreneur . In his special lecture organized on August 8, 2016, he gave several interesting tips to the students. Mr. Balagopal mentioned about the strengths and weaknesses of the present educational system, and asked the students not to be afraid to make mistakes. He suggested that students should try something new and involve in trial and error experience. This would enable new ventures and new products. Mr. Balagopal also asked to learn about conveying bad news, particularly in an organization when reporting to the higher ups. His advice was to keep trying and then succeed. The session was very useful to the students.
