International Symposium 2016

 
‘Social Business is not philanthropy or CSR. It is an effort to solve the social problem and making society sustainable. Every social business is entitled to give two returns in Social Business – financial return and social returns’ thus said Paul Thomas, the Founder and Director of ESAF Microfinance and Investments Pvt Ltd (EMFIL), during the keynote address delivered at the ‘International Symposium on Microfinance in India’ organized by SDMIMD in coincides with the visit of International Students from the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University, Texas, USA.

Highlighting the programs of the Micro-credit enterprise development program, Mr. Thomas shared the achievement of the micro finance sector in social, training, women empowerment, counselling and other bunch of other services. 
 
Following the talk by Mr. Paul Thomas a special video talk on 'Intelligence, Ability and Social Responsibility' was delivered by Mr. K. Ramkumar, Executive Director, ICICI Bank, which was very well received by the audience.
 
Earlier, in his welcome address Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director of SDMIMD brought out the challenges confronting management students in Finance with fast-changing global volatility like the present Chinese yuan crisis, and the rise of special social schemes like microfinance which seeks to do what conventional banking has been unable to.

Student Exchange Program with University of Bordeaux

SDMIMD has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Bordeaux, France, for student exchange program.  Pursuant to this 3 students from SDMIMD will be spending a term in Bordeaux during the period January to March, 2016.   Students from Bordeaux are expected to visit SDMIMD for a term from June, 2016.  

CSR Conference 2015

  
A 2-Day Conference on “Corporate Social Responsibility – Approaches and Practices for Inclusive Growth” was organized by SDMIMD during November 5 & 6, 2015. The conference provided a platform for academics, practitioners, researchers and students to deliberate and reflect on issues pertaining to CSR strategies and building socially responsible businesses. 
 
Mr. Muthuraman, Former Vice Chairman, Tata Steel, in his keynote address during the inaugural session of the conference, called for affirmative action by the industry to bridge the gap in the unequal opportunity society.  It is regrettable that the government should mandate CSR spending, he felt. Tracing the history of CSR, Mr. Muthuraman said that the earth is four to five billion years old but the corporate, which is the product of industrial revolution, is about four centuries old and systems are just evolving. But the contribution of corporates to the GDP is exponential.  Even the purpose of business, which was earlier considered as generating profit for the investors, is being challenged. Is the purpose of business mere profit or, improving the quality of life, he asked.. Further, Mr. Muthuraman opined that business is meant for the society and urged the business to choose between profit and human face to doing business.

International Economics Conference 2015

 
SDMIMD organized a two day International Conference on Global Economic Growth and Sustainability: Challenges & Prospects on November 20-21, 2015. The Conference was inaugurated by Dr. Stephen ARO-GORDON, Professor & Head, Financial Mathematics, Baze University, Nigeria. Dr. Stephen, in his inaugural address emphasized the need for sustainable development through microfinance initiatives.  He suggested that ‘wealth of nations’ would need to be complimented by ‘health of nation’ if the growth has to sustain in the long run. 
 
Mr. Francis Kurian, Asst. Vice President, Navia Markets Ltd (Trade Plus), Chennai also graced the occasion. Mr. Kurian highlighted the role of capital markets in spearheading the economic growth. He emphasized that with the merger of Forward Markets Commission (FMC) with SEBI, opportunities for investment commodity markets have opened up exponentially.
 
The conference was attended by 244 delegates from across the world including countries such as Bangladesh, Nigeria, Iran, Philippines and Botswana and more than 160 research papers were presented and deliberated across the two days.

Talk on IT and Knowledge Outsourcing by Mr. Kulkarni

Mr. Anant Kulkarni , who owns  Chestnut India Solutions Pvt Ltd, Mysore addressed the students of SDMIMD regarding IT Outsourcing on December 12, 2015. Besides discussing the models and strategies adopted by Indian IT outsourcing companies, the speaker also explained the processes involved in KPO with emphasis on Medical Coding. Mr. Anant’s talk also helped the participants understand the opportunities that exists in Medical Coding /Billing, Rural BPO etc.

Blood Donation Camp 2015

"The blood you donate gives someone another chance at life" thus said Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD, inaugurating the Blood Donation Camp 2015 on Thursday, December 10, 2015. In his address said 'SDMites are always seen coming forward with great enthusiasm, to address social issues whenever the situations call for the same'. The event was a reinforcement of the principles for which SDMIMD stands and the social responsibility attitude demonstrated by the students. 
 
Under an event organized by HDFC Bank, SDMIMD hosted a blood donation camp at the Institute with the medical support from Rotary Chandrakala Hospital Mysore. A large number of students donated blood on the occasion. 

SDMIMD was ‘HR Hub’ during International HR Conference

 
‘Human Resource Management, as a function, needs to emphasize on revolutionary, transitional and transformational change’ said Mr. Richard Lobo, Senior Vice-President & Head - HR, Infosys Ltd, while delivering keynote address at the inaugural function of 4th International Conference on Managing Human Resources at Workplace on December 4, 2015. Mr. Lobo talked about the contemporary challenges faced by HRM, such as, disruptive technology and innovation. He stressed on the challenges of managing the millennial workforce and the role of private networks in managing people. 
 
Dr. Mousumi Sengupta, Conference Chair, presented the conference theme and stated that HRM is expected to play the role of the strategic business partner in todays’ organizations. Director Dr. N. R. Parasuraman welcomed the gathering and emphasized on the need of empowering HRM in organizations. 
 
The two-day conference had several invited lectures and panel discussion with eminent corporate leaders and academic speakers. The conference was attended by 250 academic scholars and HR practitioners from India and countries, such as, Bangladesh, Iran, Maldives, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, UAE, and US. The conference created a forum to discuss and deliberate on contemporary HR topics, such as, Human capital management, emotional intelligence, HR and sustainability, Green HRM, HR Analytics, competency mapping, HR Accounting, HR scorecard, managing talent pipeline, and so on.

Workshop on New Directions in HRM Tools and Techniques

A One-day Pre Conference Workshop on ‘New directions in HRM tools and techniques’ was organized at SDMIMD on December 3, 2015. The workshop was designed to provide a general overview on contemporary tools and techniques in the field of Human Resource Management and covered contemporary topics, such as, emotionally intelligent leadership, IT is managing HR, Data analysis in HRM, and, Quality tools in people management. The workshop attracted nominations from various educational institutions and corporate. 
 
Dr. Mousumi Sengupta, Dr. Nilanjan Sengupta, Prof. Mohamed Minhaj, Prof. Rajendra Todalbagi, and, Dr. Srilakshminarayana, G. conducted the workshop sessions. The workshop organized as part of 4th International Conference on “Managing Human Resources at the workplace” scheduled on December 4 & 5, 2015, was coordinated by Dr. Sunil M.V.
