Economies across the globe have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic early 2020. Capital Markets in India during the same period have seen a bullish trend despite challenging economic outlook. On a positive note, the bulging NPA levels have witnessed a downward trend thanks to the active role of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). The likely strengthening of banks’ financials is expected to streamline credit flows which is one of the key drivers of growth of a country. In hindsight, the markets seem to be insulated from the vagaries of the macroeconomic factors. The Indian market is valued at almost twice that of China’s capital market. A major part of foreign direct investments into India is in the form of portfolio investments in the capital markets. This is due to printing of currencies by world economies to overcome the recessionary trend. The additional currencies have flown into emerging markets like India. Whether the bullish trend is transitory or not hinges on the Central Bank’s decision on key policy rates and macroeconomic outlook of the future. Given the integrated nature of the global markets, change in key policy rates of the U.S becomes a critical determinant of the bull run in India. The dynamics of corporate finance and the functioning of capital markets are expected to change in this new normal. The conference provides a platform to deliberate on the aforesaid issues.
Enthused by the resounding success of the earlier international conferences on Finance, Accounting and Banking, SDMIMD takes pleasure in announcing the 9th International Conference on 28th and 29th of October,2021.
The conference is organized under the aegis of BCIC (Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce) – SDMIMD Center for Management Excellence.

The trends of global economic growth reflect two contracting stories. If many of the African and some of the Asian economies failed in pulling off the much-desired growth, rise of countries like Japan, Singapore, South Korea, China etc surprised the world. India stays somewhere in between these two extremes.  Development is neither universal nor uniform.  In the market driven economy, the fruits of development are not distributed evenly leading to imbalanced society. The persistent economic crisis in different parts of the world has made economists to wonder whether the practicing economic growth models are potential enough to generate sustainability in growth.  Economists and policy makers also ponder the question of how large is the size of trade-off between economic growth and sustainable development. Thus, the major and immediate challenge of the current century is to generate growth which is inclusive and sustainable. In order to create a better and sustainable future, Governments, Corporates and NGOs need to work collectively and playing their respective roles most effectively. The COVID-19 pandemic has added to the challenges of economic sustainability. In this backdrop, to provide a stimulating platform for academicians and practitioners to reflect, deliberate, and suggest measures that are needed both at macro and the micro levels to elevate India and other backward economies to higher and sustained growth trajectory, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) under the aegis of BCIC SDMIMD Centre for Excellence in Management Studies is organizing the international conference on “Economic Growth and Sustainable Development- Emerging Trends” on November 25 & 26, 2021. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the uncertainties relating to it, the conference would be held online.

The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the global markets and caused enormous changes in the market landscape. For instance, it was estimated that the total worldwide retail sales declined by 5.7% in 2020, to $23.4 trillion, and the impact was worse than the financial crisis in 2009 (Business Insider, 2020). On the other hand, the worldwide retail e-commerce sales grew by 27.6% in 2020, for a total of $4.28 trillion (eMarketer, 2021). The unprecedented impact of pandemic is visible in almost all industries, although many of them learned to adjust with the uncertainties, and few businesses have transformed and benefitted by adopting innovative marketing strategies. Hence, the global marketers are confronted with many challenges and required to be creative and flexible in planning and implementing their strategies successfully. During these challenging times, the global consumers are changing their behavioural patterns quickly, suiting to the new order of personal and professional lifestyles. For instance, restrictions in travel resulted in new mobility patterns; working from home followed a new outlook of social life; the increased focus on safety and hygiene resulted in healthier lifestyles; uncertainty and limited earning potential, leading to more demand for value-based offerings; and increased use of Internet technologies, defining the varied digital characteristics across the consumer segments. As consumers are adapting to the new normal, so the marketers need to have both proactive and reactive approach towards the turbulent market situations.
