Pre-Conference Workshop on 'Micro Finance for Macro Development'

 
SDMIMD had organised a one-day Pre-Conference Workshop on ‘Micro Finance for Macro Development’ on November 22, 2018. This was a part of 4th International Conference on Economic Growth and Sustainable Development. 
 
Mr. Udaya Kumar, MD & CEO, Grameen Financial Services inaugurated the workshop and delivered the keynote talk. He said that “India still has a large population that belongs to the bottom of the pyramid and inclusion does not mean having a bank account, but it has more to do with a wide range of financial services and security such as insurance, health care, education, it is beyond that. Microfinance industry is indispensable for a country like India because it caters to a large set of people who are at the bottom of the pyramid. This industry is aiding the economic growth of the Nation by catering to a humongous population that is unserved or unserved”.  
 
Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD, presided over the inaugural session and emphasised the need for result oriented research on various verticals of microfinance. 
 
Mr. V.N. Salimath, Chairman, Initiatives for Development Foundation (IDF) delivered a session on 'BC Model of Micro Financing & its Sustainability'. He also spoke about farmer vulnerabilities and the functioning of Farmer Producer Company (FPC). 
 
Dr.S.N.Prasad, Professor-SDMIMD Mysore discussed the various dimensions of the ground level issues associated with the functioning of microfinance in Indian context.  
 
Dr. Annapurna Neti, Faculty, Azim Premji University delivered lecture on the “State of Microinsurance in India”.  She emphasised on the need for good predictability of the income and insulate against the risk through insurance accordingly. 
 
The workshop did deliberate on “Nexus between Micro Credit and Sustainability: Unravelling the Research Perspectives” through a panel discussion. The consisted of: Mr. William D’ Souza, Vice-Chairman, Sanghamithra Rural Financial Services, Dr. R. Indira, President, Indian Sociological Society, and Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD, Mysore. The panel was moderated by Dr. M.R. Suresh Professor-Marketing, SDMIMD, Mysore. The discussions led to unveiling of the areas of research requirements. It was felt that financial, social, institutional, and economic perspectives of microfinance need rigorous research to facilitate MFIs’ decision making and government’s policy making.

Workshop on Lean Six-Sigma Green Belt

Mr. Vikas from KPMG (Klynvelt Peat Marwick Goerdeler) was the resource person for the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt workshop organized for the PGDM 2017-19 Batch during September 2018. The 4-day workshop was inaugurated by Dr. R. Jagadeesh, Professor - Operations, SDMIMD, on September 15, 2018. 
 
The workshop introduced the statistical tool “MINITAB” to solve analytical problems and gave insight on how use of six sigma techniques can give better growth of the organization. Several live industrial examples along with industrial applications are discussed during the workshop. The training program concluded with Assessment Test and a feedback session. 

Workshop on ‘Empirical Research in Finance’

The pre-conference workshop on ‘Empirical Research in Finance’ was held on September 6, 2018. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. S.N. Hegde, Former Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore. In his inaugural address, Prof. Hegde highlighted how a systematized research in financial management can bring constructive changes in higher educational institutions. Earlier, Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director & Professor-Finance, SDMIMD, welcomed the gathering and introduced the importance of research and publications in presenting institutional intellectual output. 
 
Prof. S.R. Viswanath, Professor and Head, School of Management and Entrepreneurship, Shiv Nadar University, New Delhi, discussed on the art of writing papers in major finance journals which are indexed in ABDC and SCOPUS. 
 
Dr. K.A. Venkatesh, Professor, Myanmmar Institute of Information Technology, demonstrated the working on ‘Data Envelopment Analysis’ using R software and discussed the application of R in finance research. 
 
In the post-lunch session, Dr. Kabaly P Subramaniam, Faculty of Business, Arab Open University, Oman, introduced ‘Theory Building Research’ and emphasized on its relevance in research. 
 
The workshop culminated in a panel discussion on ‘Contemporary Issues in Finance and Accounting’. The panelists included Dr. Janakiramudu, Professor-Finance, Alliance University; CA. Raghunandan Rao; Dr. Kotreshwar, Professor, Department of Commerce, University of Mysore; and, Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, SDMIMD. The panel discussion was moderated by Prof. S. Kannadas, Assistant Professor-Finance, SDMIMD.
 
The Conference Chair of 7th Edition of International Finance Conference, Dr. M. Sriram, Assistant Professor-Finance, SDMIMD, coordinated the event.

Workshop on Brand Management

 
The 3-Day during July 18 - 20, 2018 was all about 'Brands' for SDMites. The workshop on Branding and Brand Management by Exchange Faculty from the University of Abu Dhabi, UAE,  Dr. Shilpa Iyanna, Associate Professor of Marketing, College of Business, made students experience the journey of brand building. 
 
It started with the discussion on 'brands', how brands are built, models that help in building up a brand and the importance of a brand from the consumer perspective. Examples of top brands were also discussed such as Apple, Intel, Tata, HCL etc., with their advertising techniques. The discussion on internal and external factors that influences the marketing of a brand, the importance of culture, cross culture and challenges faced, were discussed while delivering the best marketing strategy. Dr. Shilpa opined that various local factors must be kept in mind while deciding on the marketing strategy for a brand in a particular country. 

Interactive Session on ‘Counselling and its need’

Counsellor and Trainer Ms. Ruchika Naidu addressed the new PGDM 2018-20 Batch on July 5, 2018. The interactive session covered the various aspects of counselling, such as ‘what is counselling?’, ‘Why people need counselling?’, and other myths about counselling.

Workshop on ‘How to succeed through Ph.D. Journey?’

 
“The award of Ph.D. is not an end of academic research journey. On the contrary,  it is the beginning of  the pursuit of findings to support decision-makers “thus said Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD during the inauguration of the workshop on ‘How to succeed through Ph.D. Journey?’ held on May 18, 2018.
 
Researchers should take the support of technological tools and rich resources available in the electronic database in bring out quality research. 
 
Expressing his concern on standards of research, the key resource person of the workshop Dr. R. Jagadeesh, Professor of Operations, SDMIMD, said that although the number of Ph.D. degrees awarded in the country has gone up in the recent times, the quality of research has notably gone down. Hence it is essential that the researchers focus on quality right from the beginning to ensure a valuable output from the Ph.D. program
 
The workshop focused on introducing the research etiquettes, identification of topics, research design and carrying out literature review. Research scholars from different universities in Karnataka and neighbouring states participated in the workshop. Dr. Sunil MV, Coordinator & Resource Person of the workshop, faculty members and staff present during the inaugural session. 

2-Day Pre-Course Workshop of BLCPM Program

Two-day Pre-course workshop of the course Blended Learning Certificate Program in Management (BLCPM) for the faculty of sister institutions of SDMIMD was conducted during May 18 & 19, 2018 at Mysuru in their campus. The BLCPM, a blended program having class sessions online as videos and face-to-face interactions was launched by SDMIMD, Mysuru in November 2017 on the TCS IoN platform. Participants of the BLCPM will now have to go through the online videos lessons and complete their assignments and test online in 12 weeks’ time. Post this they will be awarded a BLCPM certification jointly by SDMIMD and TCS IoN.

2-Day Workshop for Institutional Heads

 
SDMIMD joined hands with Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Southern Regionin organizing the workshop for institutional heads and chairpersons on the theme 'Restructuring and Redesigning of Higher Education Programs in India' during January 24 & 25, 2018 at SDMIMD Mysore. 
 
The Workshop was intended to address the industry needs in terms of Knowledge, Skills and Aptitude being developed among the B School students through inputs in the MBA/PGDM curriculum and to discuss the challenges faced in the form of changing business environment, demographic changes in the environment, the issue of 'dynamic business  vs static education'. The inaugural Welcome Addess was delivered by Mr Arjun Ranga, MD, N Ranga Rao and Sons and Chairman of CII Mysore Chapter. The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof Joe Philip, Chairman- XIME Group of Institutions and the Special Address was delivered by Prof Prasad SN, SDMIMD.  The sessions were chaired by Dr S Balasubramaniam, Director GRG Group of Institutions, Coimbatore. Several eminent educationists and corporate heads conducted the technical sessions.
 
The program was attended by 62 delegates from various colleges and universities across South India.
