8th International HR Conference 2019

Dr. N.  Muthukumar, President and Whole Time Director, Meritor Limited., delivered a Special Address as the Guest of Honor during the inauguration of the 8th International Conference on ‘Managing Human Resources at the Workplace’ organized by SDMIMD during 6th and 7th December 2019.  

 
Dr. Muthukumar said ‘today there is no dearth to funds or technology; if India wants to be in top 100 countries in the world by 2030, it all depends on how we make average person into extraordinary. You can’t manage everybody the same, they are not machines, people are not same, everybody needs different treatment that is where leadership is making much more important and leadership counts. According to research, in intellectual productivity, India is four times higher than America but unfortunately, we are failing to deliver’.
 
Earlier, while welcoming the gathering, Dr. N. R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD, emphasized on the role of HRM, as the strategic business partner, and stressed upon the need for an organization specific HRM policy framework, at place. Dr. Mousumi Sengupta, Conference Chair, presented the theme of the conference and highlighted the need for managing human relations and intelligence, in the context of emergence of Industry 4.0. 
 
Dr. Susanne Wilpers, Director International Programs, Faculty of Business and Transport Management, Heilbronn University, Germany, in her virtual keynote address, indicated that, using mobile technology, social network and predictive analytics have been the recent trends in HRM practices in Germany. 
 
Distinguished speakers from India and abroad, Dr. Ashly H. Pinnington, Dean of Research, the British University in Dubai; Mr. Tajas S J, CEO, GI TAGGED, Bengaluru; delivered invited talks. In a panel discussion, distinguished women leaders, Ms. Suchitra Royroth, Vice President – Operations, Cyient DLM; Ms. Mary Vinay Uttarkar, Training Consultant, Theorem Inc; Ms. Nisha , Manager – HR, Mypol; and, Dr. Juin Choudhury, Director, Acharya School of Management, Bangalore; deliberated on issues and challenges for women executives at work.  
 
The conference witnessed participation from 200+ delegates, across the country. During the conference, over 120 selected highly researched papers presented. 

2-Day Workshop on HR for SDMites by Dr. Ashly H. Pinnington

Dr. Ashly H. Pinnington, Dean of Research, Professor and Faculty of Business & Law, The British University in Dubai (BUiD), Dubai, conducted 2-Day Workshop focused on the Analytics and Metrics for HRM and Employee Well-being for HR Specialization students of the PGDM Batch 2018-20. The workshop which included activities and discussions was well received by the Young Managers. 

Pre-Conference Workshop on HR Metrics & Analytics

 
A pre-conference workshop on the ‘HR Metrics and Analytics’ was organized as part of the 8th International Conference on ‘Managing Human Resources at the Workplace’ on December 5, 2019 at the Campus. 
 
The session on ‘HR Metrics’ was delivered by Dr. Ashly H. Pinnington, Dean of Research, The British University in Dubai; followed by session by SDMIMD faculty members Prof. M. Minhaj on ‘Data analytics in HRM’ and Dr. Srilakshminarayana delivered session on ‘Statistical tools for HR Analytics’.
 
Apart from the technical sessions, an expert panel consisting of Mr. Goutham, Manager – HRIR, Radico Khaitan Ltd; Pavan Kumar SH, HR-Business Partner – Mysuru & Halol, ABB India Limited; Arkadip Ghosh, Manager – HR Meritor & AAL, Mysore; and Dr. L. Balu, HOD, School of Commerce and Economics, Presidency University, Bengaluru, discussed the topic ‘Using Data for Effective HRM’. 

KPMG Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (LSSGB) Certification Program

Lean Six Sigma is a function agnostic useful tool for every business executive across functions. The 32-hours KPMG's LSSGB Training and Certification Program spread over 4-days was organized for PGDM 2018-20 Batch Operation Specialization students during November-December 2019. The program covered DMAIC methodology and framework of problem-solving techniques using Lean and Six Sigma tools. 
 
The program was conducted in a Workshop mode which involved theory and application of tools and techniques in a simulated environment.  It has imparted structured problem-solving skills to the participants and given them an edge over others by making them business-ready.

ACBSP Best Student Research Paper

The research paper 'Impact of work experience on factors influencing the choice of B-school' by Ms Riju Mittal of PGDM 2017-19 was selected for presentation at the ACBSP Conference 2019 held at Texas, Houston on the theme 'The Art of Developing Entrepreneurial Leaders' with sponsorship to attend the conference.
 
The selection was made in the ACBSP Region 10 (South-Asia Council) Fall Conference on the theme ‘Transforming Students Success through Recruitment, Retention, and Re-entry’ held during November 15 & 16, 2017 at SDMIMD Mysore.

64th Kannada Rajyotsava Celebration

The 64th Kannada Rajyotsava was celebrated at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD), Mysore, on November 26, 2019. The Rajyotsava started with a festive mode decorating the campus with flag, buntings, Chappara and flowers. The event started with the hoisting of the Kannada flag of 40 feet and singing Kannada Naadageete ‘Jaya Bharata Jananiya tanujaate’. Dr. H. Gayathri, Deputy Director and Chairperson – Academics addressed the students and wished them. The campus had turned into Mini Karnataka with everyone wearing the Stole (Valli) of yellow and red combination resembling Kannada Flag.
 
Students, Faculty members and Staff paid respect to Goddess Kannada Matha by performing arathi which was followed by a special lunch with unique dishes of Karnataka prepared, planned and served by the students to the faculty and staff members of the institute. In the evening, sports and cultural programs were organized. Traditional local games of Karnataka were introduced to other state students. Students from other states and few staff members sang Kannada songs and danced to the tunes. Kabaddi match played between the staff and students’ teams and the ‘Folk dance’ performance were the highlights of the celebrations.

Talk by Mr. Pramod Padmaprabhaiah

SDMIMD organized a talk by alumnus Mr Pramod Padmaprabhaiah as part of the Prerana Alumni Lecture Series on November 25, 2019.  Mr Pramod is currently working with NTT Data Services as Global Enterprise Applications Leader.
 
In his talk, Mr Pramod presented the concept of ‘Gig Economy’ and explained how small activities become a part of Gig Economy extending a monetary benefit. Mr Pramod mentioned that scaling some activities in terms of monetary value can be a complex task at times and the law-making bodies find it difficult to make policies for these. It is believed that 2023 over 6 million people will be a part of the Gig Economy. The speaker explained how Bloggers, Youtubers, Craftspeople, Stack photographers, Freelancers, Software and Web designers constitute and influence Gig Economy. Further, he touched upon the characteristics of the Gig economy with examples of ‘Kaggle’ and ‘Amazon Mechanical Turk’.  The talk concluded with the discussion on the four major connections in the Gig Economy i.e. Place, Routines, Purpose and People.  

Workshop on Strategic Management

Dr Sebastian Chantelot, Director of La Rochelle Business School & Vice Dean – Academics of Excelia Group conducted a workshop for the 2nd year PGDM students of SDMIMD on 15th and 16th November 2019. The theme of the workshop was “Strategic Management”
 
Dr Sebastian gave insights about global strategic management practices and also elucidated the strategies for sustainability and development in the industry. He also discussed the strategic process which includes, strategic position, strategic choices and change management and which needs to be incorporated in the business practices. He also explained the different techniques of identifying the competitive advantages and key resources of an organisation. 
 
Dr Sebastian also elaborated the Strategic Innovation aspects which are key to the success of business in today’s competitive business environment. He also discussed the various CSR and Stakeholder Management practices to be adopted by the business houses to ensure sustainable growth and development of the organisation.
 
The workshop was interesting and interactive which was followed by a case study given by him for analysis, where the students made a presentation and took an active part in the discussion of the case.
