About the Artists

Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan

In the sphere of Carnatic music, the name Lalgudi G J R Krishnan is instantly associated with melody, rhythm, masterly technique on the violin and overall musical excellence. Born in the lineage of the great Saint and Composer Shri Thyagaraja, he was meticulously groomed by his father and Guru, the great legend Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman. Raised in an atmosphere redolent of sublime, divine music, Krishnan has metamorphosed into an outstanding musician.

“Sangeetha Choodamani”, “Nadhabhushanam”, “Kalaimamani”, “Sangeetha Kalasagara” Lalgudi G J R Krishnan began his musical training at the tender age of five under the watchful guidance of his illustrious grandfather Lalgudi Gopala Iyer and has been honed to perfection by his illustrious father. His innate talent and the natural brilliance and musical ability combined with focused training and disciplined approach, has elevated him to a much sought after artiste and over the years he has carved an elevated niche for himself as a top-ranking violinist.

Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi

“Sangeetha Choodamani”, “Tantri Nada Mani”, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, daughter and disciple of the great maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman, has been a worthy torch bearer of this great parampara. She has over the years contributed not only to the continuation of these unique bani, but has made it flourish further. The fifth generation musician in the family, Vijayalakshmi grew up in an atmosphere of reverberating, rich music. Early signs of her musical inclinations were apparent, when she was only two years old when even then, she could identify the solfa syllables in any musical phrase. These early trends were nurtured further when she commenced her lessons at the age of six under the watchful eyes of her perfectionist father. At the age of thirteen she went on stage for the first time with her father. Since then, she has been performing regularly in violin duets and trios with her father Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman and brother Krishnan. Over the years she has grown into a mature artiste and a violinist in her own right. She, along with her brother, Lalgudi Krishnan, is a leading exponent of the Lalgudi style, which is characterized by boundless innovation while strictly adhering to tradition and eloquently capturing the mood and essence of any composition.

Lalgudi G J R Krishnan & Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi will be accompanied by Vidwan H.S. Sudheendra on Mridangam and Vidwan G.S. Ramanujan on Ghatam
