Motivational Talk by SDMites Toastmasters' Club

Toastmasters' Club of SDMIMD organized a motivational talk for PGDM 2018-20 Batch on Thursday, January 24, 2019. Mr. Pranab Singh – Entrepreneur, Motivational Speaker and Business Mentor was the invited speaker for the talk. 
 
The talk started with the journey of the speaker as an entrepreneur, his experiences, the failures and opportunities to prosper. Mr. Singh emphasized that good is never great, and opined that continuous development is essential for the growth of both the enterprise and the entrepreneur. He also highlighted the value of communication in today’s dynamic business scenario. 
 
Mr. Singh reiterated the importance of mind over matter and stated that it is essential to put our minds in things that matter to be successful in both personal and professional front. Elucidating the difference between vision and sight, he shared anecdotes demonstrating the importance of leadership qualities in an entrepreneur. Mr. Singh concluded his talk stating the importance of devotion and commitment in every endeavour of life. The talk concluded with an interesting interactive question and answer session.

Prerana Alumni Lecture Series 2019

 
On 19th January 2019, SDMites organized Technical Session by Prerana – SDMIMD Alumni Association, for the first year PGDM students. SDMIMD Alumnus Mr. Niranjan Naik, National Sales Head, Bosch, and Secretary, Prerana, delivered talk on ‘Strategic Management’ and Mr. Abhijith M.K., VP, Reliceli Bangalore, delivered the session on ‘Sales and Marketing as a career - with relevance to Industry 4.0’.
 
Mr. Niranjan Naik, in his speech gave a brief about Bosch’s energy and building solutions. Mr. Naik emphasised on the market oriented strategic planning which is a significant managerial process of developing and maintaining a viable fit between an organisational objective or skills, resources, and its changing market opportunities. He also focused on the strategic planning action areas which includes managing companies or businesses as an investment portfolio; assessing each business activity by considering market’s growth rate and company’s position and fit in that market; developing a strategy (game plan) to achieve long run objectives. He also highlighted that four levels in a strategic planning viz. the corporate level, division level, business level and product service level. He then elucidated the difference between a strategic plan and a business plan in terms of their respective objectives, tenure and focal points. Further, he enunciated the different components of a strategic plan and a business plan.
 
Mr. Abhijith M K in his speech, shared his experiences in the field of sales and marketing, He narrated the challenges he had faced at the threshold of his career in the field of sales. Mr. Abhijith stated that, the students should be ready to face challenges and mange it well when they take up a career in the field of sales and marketing. He opined that, different industries and markets follow the same concepts but adopt different methodologies. He also requested students to have a firm conviction and never give up during turbulent times. He further added that, in order to be successful in this career, it is essential to do things differently and tap every opportunity that comes by. Mr. Abhijith concluded his speech by enlightening the students about the business with relevance to the industry 4.0
 
The session was concluded with a question and answer forum wherein the students took an active part.

Guest Lecture by Dr. Ullas Rao

Dr. Ullas Rao, Assistant Professor of Finance - School of Social Sciences, Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus, United Arab Emirates; and former faculty in finance at SDMIMD addressed PGDM 2017-19 Batch on December 28, 2018. Dr. Ullas focused his talk on CAPM Model and explained how portfolios have to handle with regards to risks and returns. Further, he touched upon CPM Line and the calculation of risk free return and how risk premium have to be arrived. During the Q&A session he explained the calculation of Beta with significance of Beta in market and gave explanation about the portfolio theory and efficient market hypothesis. The talk was very educative and informative. 

Prerana - Alumni Talk by Mr. Sudhindra

Mr. Sudhindra K.S. of 1999-2001 batch was on campus to deliver a talk on "IT Industry: Opportunities and expectation from Management Graduates" on December 22, 2018, to the PGDM 2018-20 Batch. 
 
Mr. Sudhindra has gained good experience in driving sustainable business value through DevOps, Lean and Agile Transformation at Philips. His talk related to these experiences. He stated that the lack of knowledge on how an industry operates results in many people getting rejected in the interviews, despite having scores.  

Interactive Session on Wealth Management

An interactive session on ‘Wealth Management’ was organized by Preraran – SDMIMD Alumni Association on December 22, 2018. Mr. Vijay Kumar M., Independent Financial Adviser and alumnus of PGDM Program delivered the session.
 
Students from PGDM Program with finance specialization attended the sessions. The session commenced with drawing up ideas from the students ranging from various investment avenues to career opportunities in the field of finance. The speaker briefed about the various investment avenues which yield high returns to the investors and said, ‘in today’s dynamic business economy, there is no proper financial planning and quality advise for the investors which include lack of trust factor and continuity which is very crucial’.
 
Mr. Vijay Kumar then enunciated the benefits of a term insurance plan for an investor and his family. In his talk, sir also threw light on the financial pyramid, the process of which involves, protection planning (investing in insurance schemes), emergency cash flow planning (an investment in an emergency fund), debt reduction planning (considering loans) and investment planning (for achieving goals).
 
Mr. Vijay Kumar emphasized that, for a financial adviser to be successful, the process of financial planning needs to be done objectively and scientifically and it is essential for a financial adviser to have a follow up with clients, review their investments annually and involve them completely in the process of financial planning and wealth management. He reiterated that time spent in the market matters for making a worthwhile investment and it is not timing the market that matters.
 
The session was concluded with students seeking clarifications from Mr. Vijay Kumar on various aspect of finance and wealth management.

Invited talk on IPR by Dr. Bheemesh

Dr. M N Bheemesh, NIALS and Senior Advisor, ALMT Legal, Advocates and Solicitors, Bangalore, was invited to deliver talk on ‘An overview of Intellectual Property Rights’ on December 17, 2018 to the PGDM 2018-20 Batch and PGPM 18-19 Batch. The main aim of the session was to sensitize the students about the intellectual property rights and its significance in the management industry.
 
Dr. Bheemesh began the session by giving a brief idea of what intellectual property rights are and how it can be related to the developments in the field of management. The speaker cited the noteworthy contributions made by Arogyaswami Paulraj, Sumita Mitra, Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar who are the beneficiaries of the valuable patents for their innovations in their respective fields of expertise. He then stated that it is innovation that distinguishes between a leader and a follower and mentioned that, ideas are not patentable unless it is developed into a working model. He also highlighted about the politics of Artificial Intelligence and opined that, today the nation is ruled by financialization, globalization and digitization.
 
The session was concluded with a question and answer session wherein all the students took an active part.

Technical Session on Technology in Education Transformation

Mr. Amit Agnihotri, Founder and CEO, MBA Universe.com, Noida, was the invited speaker for the technical session scheduled on Day-2 of the conference scheduled on December 15, 2018. The topics revolved mainly around technology’s impact in transforming the education and transportation systems in the Indian context.
 
Mr. Agnihotri focused the session on advent of technology in human resources and jobs. He also touched upon how some industries like Insurance, Retail, Energy and Media are going to face drastic changes in the future due to the onset of the technological advancement. To substantiate his views, he cited examples such as OYO becoming the largest company in the hospitality industry and Driverless cars being the future of automobiles. 
 
Mr. Agnihotri emphasised on Industry 4.0, threat to traditional jobs, Rule-based automation and the impact and importance of innovation and creativity in the future. He opined that human being is unique, the innovation and creativity can’t be replaced by AI or automation. Furthermore, he supported his views by explaining them through the Knowing, Doing and Being framework by Srikant M Datar and ended his insightful talk. Dr. S.N. Prasad, Professor – OB/HR, SDMIMD, Mysore, chaired the session. 

Values for Work Life Balance – by Prof. Ravichandran

Prof. N. Ravichandran, former Professor, Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad (IIM A) and former Director, IIM Indore was the speaker for the 2nd Technical Session scheduled in the International HR Conference 2018 edition. Prof. Ravidhandran with his rich expertise and experience in the theme of the conference – Managing HR at the Workplace, gave very insightful thoughts. The talk was humorous at the same time. Prof Ravichandran shared selected stories from Panchatantra while explaining the core values for work life balance. He emphasised on several core values and life lessons that must be inculcated to lead a balanced life. He also spoke about specific virtues in the organizational context. Dr. R. Jagadeesh, Professor – Operations, SDMIMD, chaired the technical session.

Technical Session on Leadership at HR Conference

Mr. Mahalingam C, Managing Director, Lead Theatre Consulting, Bangalore, the technical session speaker the first session of the International HR Conference 2018 held on December 14, 2018. Mr. Mahalingam started his speech by stating that “Leadership is all about continuous purification and not glorification”. He said organisations need to reinvent themselves every decade or as and when required to thrive and remain relevant. He mentioned that agility, resilience, bold action and integrative thinking are imperative in today’s digital world. Mr. Mahalingam concluded the session by explaining how digitalization is altering business models and how it is necessary for organizations to reinvent themselves. Dr. M.R. Suresh, Professor – Marketing, SDMIMD, chaired the session. 

Valedictory Address to IEC 2018 by Dr.M.S.Sriram

Dr. M.S.Sriram, Visiting Professor-IIM Bangalore & Distinguished Fellow at IDRBT- RBI delivered valedictory address to the 4th International Conference on “Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Emerging Trends” on November 24, 2018.  Dr.Sriram raised concern over the widening wealth gap in the society in the reform era, which is the major threat to the major threat to the growth sustainability. He strongly argued that, the faster the growth rate, the greater are the chances of taking something away from the future. He opined that, sustainability is all about extracting as much as we can replenish. Dr. Sriram also highlighted on how growth is always moving us towards exclusion from. The talk emphasised on the need for striking a balance between growth and sustainable development for the overall development of national economies.
