Mr. Marcus Pfefferer, Managing Director, Ducker Worldwide Management Consulting Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, was the speaker for Day-2 of Orientation Program 2018 scheduled on July 5, 2018. The talk focused on giving an overview of research and consulting industry, introducing the service provided by Ducker Worldwide pertaining to research; consulting and advisory services.

Mr. Sid Mookerji, Silicon Rd Ideation Labs Pvt. Ltd., Mysore, was all praise for SDMIMD for having given the right platform to young managers by inculcating entrepreneurship into its formal course and helping to foster ideas and thoughts through e-Cell ‘Swayam’. Mr. Mookerji presented the journey of an entrepreneur which is hard with tough challenges. The Curtain Raiser on Launch of Start-up supports Initiative was scheduled on July 4, 2018. In the session, Mr. Mookerji shared statistics about start-ups in India. He mentioned that only 3% of the Start-up would be able to make it until five years. He stressed the need for hard work and focus to make start-ups work.
A brief introduction was given to the students on the proposed arrangement involving SDMIMD and a few other Mysore-based institutes for continuous orientation on entrepreneurship-related activities

‘Vision, Honesty, competence, commitment, Confidence, integrity, courage, straightforwardness, imagination, are the core qualities for a person to become an Institutional Builder’ said Prof. S. Prabhakar, Honorable Secretary, SDM Educational Trust, in his address delivered during the commencement of ‘Orientation Program 2018’ organized for the new batch of PGDM 2018-20 on July 4, 2018. Prof. Prabhakar recalled the efforts of the SDME Trust and educational service to society by Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala.
Earlier Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD, delivered the welcome address and Prof. S.N. Prasad, Chairman-Admission, introduced the dignitaries to the new batch and their parents.

Mr. Tarun B. Talreja of PGDM 2017-19, won First place in Trading Competition held during April 30, 2018 to May 7, 2018, organized by J Wings, Bangalore. The prize included a cash award of $400 and certificate. |

The recent technological advances have increased a teacher’s responsibility in getting trained in specific tools for analysing the data. ‘R’ is one such tool that helps the researcher to analyse the data with ease. Due to its popularity, it has become important for academia to learn it in detail. To address this training need a 2-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on "R" in Research was offered to on June 14 & 15, 2018 at SDMIMD.
The FDP focused on training the participants in R and also on steps to be adopted by faculty and students in using R for research and publications. Hands-on sessions introduced feature available in R to the participants.
Dr. Srilakshminarayana was the resource person for the programme.

Dr. Mathirajan, Faculty, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, was the invited speaker for the Business Landscape Program session scheduled on June 11, 2018 at SDMIMD Auditorium. The talk introduced PGDM 2017-19 Batch to various aspects of business analytics and trends in descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analysis.
The speaker demonstrated how linear programming and various other algorithms including solver, lindo and lingo programs helps managers to solve day-to-day problems faced by the organizations.
Dr. Mathirajan shared experience in the project carried out for Bangalore Mahanagara Transport Corporation (BMTC) on location planning and routing of various depos and bus stops for profit maximisation.

A Management Development Program on Creativity and Problem Solving was successfully conducted for the benefit of participants from the N. Ranga Rao & Sons group from Mysore, held on June 7, 2018. The participants represented different functional areas like Marketing, Operations, Information Technology, Finance, and Supply Chain Management, under the group. Mr. Dinesh. C, Vice President – HR of the NRR Group was also present during the sessions and encouraged the participants to take up problems related to the participants’ functional area and develop solutions. The main faculty for the program was Dr. R. Jagadeesh, Professor, Operations Management and Quantitative Techniques, SDM IMD, who conducted four sessions covered different aspects of creativity and problem solving. The sessions discussed the concepts and theoretical aspects of creativity, developing the ability to think differently, finding solutions through creative techniques, and also involved hands-on exercises and games, along with solving puzzles. All these activities stimulated the participants who later in the day developed solutions for their department related problems, using a systematic procedure as given in the worksheet. The participants expressed their satisfaction and appreciation through their feedback at the end of the program.

As in previous years, the second year students were welcomed back after their Summer Internship Projects with a week-long orientation called “Business Landscape".
To support the students and to make them ready for a corporate career, and to sensitize on general awareness topics of contemporary interest and also to the broad vistas of strategy and leadership a Week-long Business Landscape Course was designed and offered to the PGDM 2017-19 Batch. Separate sessions were conducted on analysis of companies and statistical techniques. Prof. S N Prasad, Professor, Strategy, SDMIMD, coordinated the program
The week-long program gave a platform to the young managers to get ready for the specialization and placement activities scheduled during the academic year. A second phase of this orientation is planned later in the academic year.

“The award of Ph.D. is not an end of academic research journey. On the contrary, it is the beginning of the pursuit of findings to support decision-makers “thus said Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD during the inauguration of the workshop on ‘How to succeed through Ph.D. Journey?’ held on May 18, 2018.
Researchers should take the support of technological tools and rich resources available in the electronic database in bring out quality research.
Expressing his concern on standards of research, the key resource person of the workshop Dr. R. Jagadeesh, Professor of Operations, SDMIMD, said that although the number of Ph.D. degrees awarded in the country has gone up in the recent times, the quality of research has notably gone down. Hence it is essential that the researchers focus on quality right from the beginning to ensure a valuable output from the Ph.D. program
The workshop focused on introducing the research etiquettes, identification of topics, research design and carrying out literature review. Research scholars from different universities in Karnataka and neighbouring states participated in the workshop.
